Why do you need a cover letter?

You are seriously compromising yourself if you omit to send a cover letter when sending out a job application, even if the ad you are responding to or the person you spoke to didn't ask for one, it is always assumed that you will send one. A generic one won't do, you must tailor it the company and tell them what you can do for them.

How to write a cover letter?

1. Keep it formal

The style of your letter should be formal, use appropriate titles like Mr, Mrs, Ms or Dr. You should, as far as possible, address your letter to the person who makes the hiring decisions rather then to Human Resources where your resume will just be placed in a pile.

Do not lapse into familiar language as this will immediately put off the employer who will start doubting your professionalism. Also be extra careful about your grammar, not a single mistake should be present. Get help if you are unsure of your grammar or read a book.

2. Create an interest in your reader

Most cover letters are read in about 3 seconds, so you must set yourself apart from the others. The first thing that will draw the reader to your cover letter is the layout of the letter. With all the word processing softwares available today, it is possible to create an attractive layout for your letter.

Also, avoid rambling on about how great it would be to work for that company but instead focus on what you can do for the employer. Emphasize the skills and knowledge that you are bringing in. Also talk about the company's current projects, future plans... to show that you have a genuine interest in that company and that you did not just pick it out of the telephone book (even if you did).

3. Make your cover letter more readable

Underline or put in bold the crucial or important parts of your cover letter, such as your education, relevant experience etc.., Use a 12 point font and make sure the words are dark when printed out and your letter is smudge free.

Also, give a title to your cover letter to let the employer know the job you are applying for.
