Positive-ness, Patience and Prudence - The 3 Ps to kick start your job search - By Wendy Tan Yin Chern

Be Positive

A positive state of mind (and heart) is critical to your job search success. As simple as this proposition sounds, it is quite common to be overwhelmed by the fear of a fruitless search as such and this very notion, subconscious or otherwise, can defeat the whole exercise from the start.

All too often, job seekers search for jobs with angst and anxiety instead of excitement and enthusiasm. Usually, financial concerns are among the underlying issues which give rise to this set of negative emotions. Unfortunately, the desire to be economically active in the shortest time possible can ultimately hinder a successful employer-employee match.
Being positive about the process will allow you to make the most of the world of career opportunities available to you and employer possibilities suitable for you. Eliminating the mindset that job hunting is a daunting task will free you to assess and explore each of your options more objectively and thoroughly so as to yield better employment prospects.

Be Patient

While patience is required at every stage of the job search process (and especially after you have sent out your applications and are awaiting replies), it is actually most critical right at the beginning, before you send out your applications.

It pays to take the time to study the background of each prospective organization to establish that it can provide you with the environment and opportunities for career development according to your expectations and also that its culture is aligned with your values and beliefs. The importance of this is elaborated below.

By making the effort to effect careful and thorough research on each potential employer at this stage (as opposed to just before an interview) will definitely facilitate the composing of your cover letter and hence offer you a better chance of being short-listed by the company. Further, you will understand more about your own preferences when you compare the various corporate cultures and be able to discern your suitability amongst each of them.

Hence, be patient in your search and research so that you improve the probability of finding a good job fit.

Be Prudent

Being qualified for the job does not ensure your suitability for its demands! Since two identical job descriptions can offer two completely dissimilar work settings, it is sensible practice to gain insight into each of their distinguishing factors and make a comparison as regards their similarities and differences.

Essentially, it is not advisable to apply for a job simply because your qualifications match the requirements listed. You also have to ascertain if your personality fits the personality (corporate culture) of the organization. This is critical to long-term job satisfaction as your morale and productivity would definitely be higher than it otherwise would have been in another organization that did not share your fundamental values.

As highlighted above, being patient in your research will give you the opportunity to weed out companies whose practices may clash with your own working style and this will in turn save you from the trouble of applying to such organizations and the despair of "rejection" when you find out later at the interview that there is no meeting of minds.

Barring the urgent need to find a job "for the pay check" to meet a dire financial need, the search for a job should be a search for a career. The quest for that long-term satisfaction and personal fulfillment entails understanding that your personality and values, in addition to your qualifications and prior working experience, must find a comfortable fit in your choice of employer and employment. And this happy marriage stems from the beginning of your search with a positive attitude, patient evaluation and prudent decision-making forming a firm foundation for a successful match.
